The Loi Montagne makes winter equipment compulsory in 34 départements from 1 November to 31 March: here is what that means for your wheels.

Two garage visits a year, an entire season driving on snow-covered or icy roads, and road salt steadily building up on your wheel rims: the winter tyre requirement is more than just a legal obligation. It also sets a precise calendar that highlights two moments when the edge of your alloy wheel is particularly at risk. Before looking at these in detail, let's recap the exact regulations.

Loi Montagne 2026: the regulatory framework made clear

From 1 November to 31 March, in 34 départements located in mountainous areas — the Alps, Pyrenees, Massif Central, Jura, Vosges, and Corsica — all vehicles must be fitted with one of the following devices on the drive wheels:

  • 3PMSF-marked tyres (mountain snowflake symbol): the only marking still accepted for winter tyres since the 2024/2025 winter season. M+S marking alone is no longer sufficient.
  • Approved snow chains or anti-skid socks fitted to the drive wheels.

The affected zones are defined by prefectural order and indicated by roadside signs. The legislation provides for a 4th-class traffic offence, i.e. a fine of 135 euros with the possibility of vehicle immobilisation. In practice, the authorities have so far taken an educational approach: fines remain rare, but they do exist and the risk is not negligible.

For drivers who regularly travel in the départements subject to the winter equipment requirement — or who pass through them occasionally — the question is no longer whether you need to be equipped, but how to manage this requirement effectively.

Two visits to the garage, two critical moments for your alloy wheels

Switching to winter tyres, then back to summer tyres: these two operations mean at least two wheel removal-and-refitting cycles every year. It is precisely during refitting that alloy wheels are most vulnerable: the wheel is handled, positioned on the hub, and the slightest contact with a tool or the edge of a workbench is enough to nick the rim.

Winter also brings another aggravating factor that is rarely mentioned: road de-icing agents. Sodium chloride — sometimes in brine form, sometimes replaced by calcium chloride in extreme cold — is hygroscopic. It retains moisture against surfaces and maintains a conductive saline film. On a wheel whose lacquer has already been compromised by abrasion, this film triggers electrochemical corrosion: salt does not attack an intact lacquer finish, it exploits existing defects.

On slippery roads, kerb-striking incidents become far more frequent: parallel parking on compacted snow, pulling out of a parking space on black ice, misjudging a kerb approach when visibility is poor. Reduced grip increases stopping distances and makes steering corrections less precise.

What this means in practice for protecting your alloy wheels

The AlloyGator is a composite nylon profile — with UV stabiliser and impact modifier — that sits between the tyre and the rim edge. It intercepts contact with kerbs before the metal is reached. It does not protect the wheel structure, does not prevent buckling, and is not designed for potholes: its role is specifically targeted at the peripheral rim edge, precisely the zone exposed during lateral impacts.

  • Compatible with wheels from 12 to 24 inches, maximum rim edge thickness 9 mm
  • 15 colours available, with an online simulator to preview the look on your vehicle
  • Workshop fitting: approximately 1 hour, vehicle raised, tyre deflated
  • TÜV-approved, MIRA-tested
  • 2-year warranty when fitting is carried out by a certified approved fitter in the network

Logically, the most sensible time to fit alloy wheel protectors is before winter, ideally when switching to winter tyres: a single appointment, a single hour off the road. Repairing a damaged rim edge costs significantly more than preventive protection fitted in advance.

Consult the product sheet for the AlloyGator set of 4 protectors or find a certified approved fitter near you to plan fitting at your next tyre change. If you drive an Audi or a BMW — two brands frequently seen on Alpine roads — the dedicated pages for Audi alloy wheel protection and BMW alloy wheel protection list compatible references by model.

FAQ

Do snow chains damage alloy wheels?

A correctly sized chain fitted to the drive wheel does not touch the rim edge. The risk comes mainly from a poorly adjusted chain that slaps against the wheel arch, or from a hurried fitting or removal at the roadside in the cold. The rim itself remains exposed to kerb contact throughout the entire winter usage period.

Is M+S marking still sufficient in areas subject to the winter tyre requirement?

No. Since the 2024/2025 winter, the M+S marking alone is no longer accepted in the 34 affected départements. Only tyres bearing the 3PMSF marking (three-peak mountain snowflake) are compliant, or alternatively removable anti-skid devices on the drive wheels.

Can AlloyGator be fitted at the same time as the winter tyre changeover?

Yes, this is precisely the most convenient time: the tyre is already off the wheel and the rim is fully accessible. An approved AlloyGator fitter can complete the fitting in around one hour. This adds just a single appointment to your winter schedule, rather than having to arrange a separate one.
