Winter tyre fitting: the moment when many alloy wheels get scratched

Protect your alloys before the next kerb

Fitting winter tyres is a genuinely risky moment for your alloy wheels: the lever that slips, the poorly protected clamping jaw, the rubber made stiffer by the cold — every visit to the workshop is an opportunity to scratch the rim edge.

Twice a year, your vehicle goes on a tyre changer. In autumn to fit the winter tyres, in spring to put the summer ones back on. This seasonal cycle, now mandatory in 34 mountain départements under the Loi Montagne (Alps, Pyrenees, Massif Central, Jura, Vosges, Corsica, from 1 November to 31 March), mechanically exposes the rim edge to stresses that many drivers are unaware of. It is not necessarily a careless technician who scratches your alloy wheels — it is often a poorly adjusted machine, an unprotected lever, or a cold tyre too stiff to come free without force.

Why winter tyre fitting is a critical moment for your alloy wheels

A winter tyre comes out of storage at ambient temperature, sometimes close to zero. The rubber, designed to remain supple in the cold, is nonetheless harder to work with than its summer equivalent at the same workshop temperature. The tyre changer exerts a lateral force on the sidewall, then the lever passes between the bead and the rim edge to unseat the tyre. It is this action that scrapes against the aluminium when the machine or technique is not suited to the job.

On a Audi alloy wheel with a large diameter or a low-profile BMW alloy wheel, the rim edge is narrow, exposed, and the tyre lever has very little clearance. The result: chipped lacquer, gouges in the aluminium, and — as soon as salt or moisture gets in — electrochemical corrosion that spreads from that very point.

What a good workshop does — and what you can ask for

A workshop that is properly equipped for winter tyre fitting on alloy wheels has several layers of protection that can be used in combination:

  • Lever protectors: plastic or nylon sleeves slipped over the metal arm so that the steel does not come into direct contact with the rim edge.
  • Plastic-coated or covered head on the tyre changer, which bears against the sidewall without biting into the rim edge.
  • Pneumatic-assist or helper-arm tyre changer ("tyre changer" with "helper arm" technology): an auxiliary arm pushes the sidewall back while the lever breaks the bead, reducing the force exerted on the rim edge.
  • Correct pressure before removal: the tyre must be fully deflated. A tyre that is still slightly inflated offers more resistance and forces the technician to apply greater effort.
  • Mounting ice or mounting paste: lubricating the bead reduces friction when reseating it and avoids having to force the tyre lever.

You can raise these points without coming across as a difficult customer. A straightforward question is all it takes: "Is your machine set up for alloy wheels without direct contact on the rim edge?" A good workshop will answer without hesitation. If they don't understand the question, that in itself is useful information.

Informing the workshop about an existing rim protector

If your vehicle is already fitted with a peripheral protector such as an AlloyGator — a composite nylon profile seated between the tyre and the rim edge — inform the front desk when you arrive, not the technician at the moment they begin working on the wheel. The protector remains in place during tyre removal, provided the fitter is made aware of it and adjusts their technique accordingly. It does not interfere with work on a properly equipped machine, but it can catch an unprepared technician off guard, who might then apply force in the wrong direction.

Before you drive away, visually check that the profile has been correctly repositioned around the entire circumference and that no section has come loose at the ends. As AlloyGator fitting is carried out with the tyre deflated and the vehicle raised, any repositioning needed takes just a few minutes.

The check to carry out before leaving the workshop

Before you leave, a quick check is all it takes:

  • A full rotation of each wheel, checking the exposed face and outer rim edge in good light.
  • Tyre pressure check on each tyre (winter tyres often have specific recommended pressures, noted on the fuel filler flap or in the owner's manual).
  • Wheel nuts torqued to the correct setting, to be confirmed after 50 to 100 km unless your workshop specifies otherwise.
  • Balance checked: a heavier winter tyre or one slightly deformed from storage may require rebalancing.

If you notice a new gouge on the rim edge, report it to the workshop immediately — an on-the-spot assessment is far easier than making a claim after the fact.

To prevent this damage before it occurs, AlloyGator alloy wheel protector sets (compatible with 12 to 24-inch wheels, available in 15 colours, TÜV approved) are fitted in the workshop in under an hour. Fitting is carried out by a certified approved fitter from the network, with the tyre deflated and the vehicle raised, and comes with a warranty extended to 2 years for professional fitting.

FAQ

Does fitting winter tyres cause more damage to alloy wheels than fitting summer tyres?

Not necessarily, but the risk is higher. Winter tyre rubber is formulated to remain supple in cold conditions, which can make it less cooperative at workshop ambient temperature and force the technician to apply more effort during removal. On a low-profile or large-diameter wheel, this extra effort translates directly into greater contact pressure from the lever on the rim edge.

Can a rim protector be left in place during a tyre change?

Yes, provided you inform the front desk before the technician begins. The profile remains seated between the tyre and the wheel during removal, and it does not need to be taken off if the machine is properly equipped. Check that it is fully in position before you drive away.

What should I do if I notice a scratch on my alloy wheel after winter tyre fitting?

Report it to the workshop immediately, while the vehicle is still on the premises. Photograph the damaged areas using raking light so that the gouges are clearly visible. A deep scratch on aluminium leaves bare metal exposed to salt and moisture — it must be treated before winter, not put off until later. A rim repair at a specialist workshop costs considerably more than a preventive protector fitted in advance.
