Diamond-cut wheels: a machining process that creates a structural vulnerability

A diamond-cut alloy wheel is not simply painted or lacquered like a standard wheel. It passes through a CNC milling machine that machines the front face of the rim in raw aluminium, then receives a coat of clear lacquer. The result is a highly sought-after mirror effect found on premium ranges (BMW, Audi, Aston Martin…), but also a layering of materials that behave differently under mechanical and thermal stress.

In practice, the machined aluminium layer is exposed directly beneath the lacquer. As soon as this lacquer cracks or flakes — a light knock against a kerb edge is enough — the aluminium is left bare and oxidises rapidly. On a standard painted wheel, you are looking at a visible scratch; on a diamond-cut wheel, you are looking at a cascading deterioration that spreads beneath the lacquer.

Why repairs cost two to three times more

Repairing a damaged diamond-cut wheel requires specialist expertise that very few workshops possess:

  • Removal and balancing are mandatory before any work is carried out: between €30 and €60 per wheel depending on the centre.
  • CNC re-machining of the damaged face: €80 to €150 per wheel, only where the workshop has the required equipment.
  • Application of two-coat lacquer in a ventilated spray booth: €60 to €120 per wheel.
  • Average turnaround time: 3 to 5 working days, sometimes a week if the wheel is sent out to a subcontractor.
  • Total observed cost for a diamond-cut wheel: €200 to €400, compared with €80 to €150 for a standard painted wheel.

For a set of four, a full repair can therefore exceed €1,000 — and this figure applies equally to a BMW 5 Series fitted with 19-inch wheels as on an Audi A6 with factory diamond-cut wheels. On a vehicle under a long-term lease, these costs fall entirely on the driver at the point of return.

High-risk situations: kerbs, speed bumps, and underground car parks

The vulnerability of diamond-cut alloys is compounded by the trend towards fitting low-profile tyres (40 to 45 aspect ratio) on 18- to 21-inch wheels. Less rubber between the road surface and the aluminium lip means less absorption in the event of an impact. The most common situations:

  • Catching a kerb edge when parking in a tight space.
  • Impact on a speed bump or a poorly flush-fitted drain cover.
  • Repeated scraping against the kerbs of underground car parks (restricted width, angled manoeuvres).
  • Gravel thrown up on motorways: chips in the lacquer, the start of oxidation invisible to the naked eye.

In all these cases, the damage is not always immediately visible. Oxidation beneath the lacquer can take several weeks to become apparent, by which point the repair is already considerably more complex.

Protecting the rim edge before the first incident

FAQ

Can protectors be fitted to a diamond-cut wheel that is already lightly scratched?

Yes, provided the oxidation is not advanced. The profile covers the outer edge of the wheel, where the vast majority of impacts occur. If there are already visible lacquer chips around the rim, it is advisable to treat these before fitting in order to halt oxidation beneath the film.

Does the AlloyGator profile withstand automatic car washes?

Yes. The polymer used is resistant to heat, common solvents, and the brushes of roller car washes. It does not peel away under the effect of pressure washing under normal conditions of use.

Is the protector compatible with low-pressure (TPMS) wheels?

The profile slides between the tyre and the rim edge without altering the tyre pressure or interfering with the TPMS sensor housed in the valve or on the wheel. The approved fitter checks compatibility during fitting.
