Refurbishing a diamond-cut alloy wheel costs between €150 and €350 per wheel — here is why this finish deserves alloy wheel protection from day one.

You have just ordered an SUV or a saloon with diamond-cut alloy wheels as an option. The visual result is undeniable: the machined face catches the light, the spokes retain their tinted lacquer, and the contrast is crisp. The problem — that very same finish turns the slightest kerb scrape into a three-figure repair bill. Understanding why radically changes the calculation between "I'll wait and see" and "I'll protect them now".

What makes a diamond-cut alloy wheel structurally different

A standard painted alloy wheel receives a coat of primer, a colour lacquer, and a clear coat. The surface is uniform. A diamond-cut wheel goes through a CNC lathe after painting: a cutting tool mechanically removes the clear coat and lacquer from the front face to reveal the polished raw aluminium. The result is a two-level surface — bare aluminium and recessed lacquer — covered by an ultra-thin transparent clear coat.

This clear coat protects the aluminium against oxidation. It is thin by design: too thick, and it would mask the diamond-cut effect. It is precisely this thinness that causes problems when the wheel suffers an impact.

Why the repair costs 2 to 3 times more

  • The clear coat must be removed from the entire front face (not just the damaged area) — localised sanding creates visible halo marks.
  • The machined area must be re-cut on a CNC lathe to restore the characteristic flatness and shine. Without this step, the polished aluminium becomes dull, streaked, and uneven.
  • A new transparent clear coat is then applied across the entire face.
  • Some workshops also re-lacquer the spokes to achieve a consistent finish.

The result: €150 to €350 per wheel at a specialist workshop, sometimes more in the Paris region or for 20-inch diameters and above. For a set of four lightly kerbed wheels, the bill can easily reach €600 to €1,200.

Please note: not all bodyshops have a CNC lathe. The wheel is often sent out to a subcontractor, which extends turnaround times and justifies the margin charged.

Can you repair a damaged diamond-cut alloy wheel yourself?

Without a CNC lathe, any repair will remain visible in raking light. Professional repair at a specialist workshop remains the only realistic option for restoring the original appearance.
