AlloyGator wheel and tyre protection acts precisely where friction occurs: between the tyre sidewall and the outer edge of the alloy wheel rim.

When people think of "wheel protection", the image that often comes to mind is a film or a cosmetic cover. AlloyGator works differently: it is a high-resistance nylon profile inserted between the tyre and the wheel during fitting, forming a permanent physical barrier along the exposed rim edge. Here is exactly what it protects — and what it does not claim to cover.

The exact area of protection: the wheel rim edge

The tyre bead rests on the rim edge, known as the hump or bead seat. This alloy ridge — often polished or painted — is the first point of contact when catching a kerb, a car park wall, or a concrete barrier. An impact at just 5 km/h is enough to gouge a scratch 2 to 4 mm deep into a standard aluminium alloy wheel.

The AlloyGator profile fits precisely at this point. It wraps around the rim flange 360° and mechanically absorbs the impact in place of the metal. The nylon absorbs or deflects the force; the wheel itself remains intact beneath the protector.

  • Area covered: the entire outer edge of the wheel (flange / hump), around the full circumference
  • Protected thickness: the profile measures approximately 5 mm of effective thickness on the wheel side
  • Dimensional compatibility: available for wheels from 13 to 22 inches, including the wider profiles of the 19 and 20 inches commonly found on premium saloons and SUVs
  • Added weight: less than 100 g per wheel — with no effect on balancing within manufacturer tolerances

What the AlloyGator does not protect against — and why this is important to know

The profile covers the rim edge, not the rest of the wheel face. A severe frontal impact — from a pothole, for example — can still deform the internal structure of the wheel or damage the tyre itself. AlloyGator is not a wheel bumper: it is designed for repeated lateral scrapes — kerbs, car park edges, bollards — not for high-energy impacts perpendicular to the wheel.

Equally, the inner face of the wheel (on the calliper side) is not affected: it is not exposed to the friction risks commonly encountered during normal urban driving.

Wheel and tyre protection: the real-world interaction

One often overlooked point: a scratched wheel rim can, over time, weaken the tyre bead. Metal burrs from a deep scratch create sharp edges that attack the rubber with every flex cycle. This is rare, but has been documented on untreated scratches deeper than 3 mm.

By keeping the rim edge intact, the AlloyGator wheel protector also preserves the airtight seal between the tyre and the wheel — preventing the slow air leaks that some drivers mistakenly attribute to a faulty valve.

For vehicles fitted with run-flat tyres — common across the BMW or Audi — where wheel replacement incurs significant costs, alloy wheel protection makes direct economic sense: a new run-flat wheel costs between €400 and €900 depending on the model, compared to €99 for a set of four protectors fitted.

Fitting and expected results

Fitting is carried out in a workshop, during tyre removal and refitting. It takes approximately one hour for all four wheels. Once in place, the profile is undetectable at normal speeds and does not affect the driving experience. It is available in several colours to complement the vehicle's bodywork, with an online colour simulator available before ordering.

Owners of vehicles with specific alloy wheels — particularly those seeking protection for Aston Martin wheels or other models fitted with expensive forged rims — will find exact compatibility by vehicle on the dedicated pages.

FAQ

Does the AlloyGator profile also protect the tyre itself?

Directly, no. The profile covers the rim edge. Indirectly, it preserves the integrity of the tyre bead by preventing metal burrs from a damaged wheel from cutting into the rubber over time.

Does the profile stay in place at high speed?

Yes. Once fitted, it is held in place by the pressure of the tyre bead against the rim edge. It does not move during driving, including at speeds in excess of 200 km/h according to AlloyGator manufacturer data. No adhesive or mechanical fixings are required.

Can you fit AlloyGator yourself?

Fitting requires the tyre to be removed using a tyre machine. It cannot be carried out by hand at the roadside or in an amateur garage without tyre-fitting equipment. The AlloyGator approved fitter network offers this service for approximately €99 for a complete set of four wheels, fitting included.
