Protect your alloys before the next kerb

Fitting snow chains on alloy wheels while kneeling in the snow, at night, by the light of your hazard lights — it's in those moments that the damage happens.

A link scraping the rim as it tightens, a poorly adjusted chain rattling while driving, a device fitted hastily without a prior trial run — every mistake leaves a mark on the aluminium. Since winter 2024/2025, the French Mountain Law (Loi Montagne) has made winter equipment compulsory in 34 départements from 1 November to 31 March: tyres marked 3PMSF, or chains or snow socks on the drive wheels. The M+S marking alone is no longer accepted. Offenders face a Class 4 fine of €135 and vehicle immobilisation, even if in practice the authorities tend to take an educational approach. Better to be prepared — and prepared by the book.

Snow chains or snow socks on alloy wheels: choose before you get stuck

The first decision is made at home, in the warm — not at the roadside. It determines how your alloy wheels will come through the winter.

  • Metal chains: high traction capacity on hard-packed snow and black ice, but the links are rigid. On an alloy wheel, the rim edge is exposed with every fitting and with every wheel revolution if the tension is not perfect.
  • Snow socks: stretch textile, fitting in 5 to 10 minutes without jacking up the vehicle, virtually no hard contact with the rim. However, they require a minimum clearance between the tyre and the wheel arch — check compatibility in the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Polyurethane chains: an intermediate compromise, less aggressive than metal, effective on fresh or compacted snow.

The clearance available between the tyre and the wheel arch often dictates the choice as much as performance does. On an SUV with a generous wheel arch, both options work. On a low-slung saloon fitted with 19 or 20-inch low-profile wheels, check the clearance before you buy: some metal chains simply will not fit.

Fitting snow chains without damaging your wheels: the procedure under real conditions

The key moments come down to three distinct stages.

A dry run before the season

Fit your snow chains or snow socks in your garage, in summer or autumn, before heading to the mountains. You can check the adjustments, memorise the sequence, and avoid fumbling in the rain or in the dark. A dry run takes less than twenty minutes and spares your wheels the scratches that come from fitting them in a rush.

Fitting at the roadside

Move the vehicle onto stable ground before you start. Lay the chain or snow sock around the tyre, guiding it by hand all the way round without forcing any link against the rim. A head torch is essential: it is often the lack of visibility that causes a link to catch the aluminium rim. Connect the tensioner gradually, without any sudden jerks.

Checking tension while driving

After two to three kilometres, stop and check the tension. Chains slacken slightly once under load. A link rattling while driving strikes the rim with every wheel rotation — this is the most common cause of marks left by snow chains on alloy wheels. Re-tension if necessary. Then observe the maximum speed specified by the device manufacturer.

Removal as soon as you leave the snow-covered area

A chain used on dry or slightly damp roads puts unnecessary strain on the links and wears the device out quickly. Remove them as soon as the road is clear. Rinse and dry before storing: de-icing salt — primarily sodium chloride — is hygroscopic. It retains moisture and maintains a conductive film that accelerates corrosion wherever a metal surface is scratched or bare.

What a rim protector covers — and what it does not

A composite nylon rim protector such as the AlloyGator sits between the tyre and the rim edge. It absorbs everyday scuffs: contact with a kerb on a snow-covered road, low-speed manoeuvring on black ice. It protects the rim edge, not the wheel structure.

In the snow chain scenario, the rim protector plays a limited but real role during fitting: if a link grazes the rim while the chain is being put on, the composite nylon takes the impact instead of the aluminium. However, it does not compensate for a poorly tensioned chain that flaps while driving — repeated impacts under load go beyond its remit. It does not protect the face of the wheel or the spokes either.

Its main usefulness carries through the rest of winter: contact with snow-covered kerbs when parallel parking, pulling out of parking spaces on slippery roads, situations where reaction distances are reduced and the rim pays the price of an imprecise manoeuvre. Owners of BMW alloy wheels, Audi wheels or Dacia wheels — ranges that are frequently exposed to this type of winter use — will find a genuine benefit here.

FAQ

Can snow chains be fitted to all alloy wheels?

Technically yes, provided there is sufficient clearance between the tyre and the wheel arch. Consult the vehicle handbook and the chain manufacturer's instructions. On wide-rim, low-profile fitments (19, 20, 21 inches), compatibility must be checked model by model: some metal chains require a minimum clearance that these configurations do not always allow.

Are snow socks less aggressive on alloy wheels?

Yes, in so far as their textile construction has no metal parts in direct contact with the rim. Fitting is also quicker, which reduces the risk of scratching during installation. They perform well enough on fresh or compacted snow; on thick ice, metal chains remain superior.

Does a rim protector withstand the fitting of snow chains?

The AlloyGator is designed to absorb peripheral contacts. During chain fitting, if there is any rubbing against the rim, the composite nylon takes the impact instead of the aluminium. However, it is not designed to absorb the repeated impacts of a link flapping while driving at sustained speed: correct tension adjustment remains essential, with or without a protector.
