Kerbs and parallel parking: why the front right wheel always takes the hit

Protect your alloys before the next kerb

The front right wheel takes the brunt of kerb impacts: understanding why allows you to act before the first deep scratch appears.

Tight parallel parking, a misjudged angle, a raised kerb at 12 or 15 cm: in the vast majority of urban scrapes, it is the front right wheel that takes the first hit. This is no coincidence — it is purely mechanical. And the cost that follows — repair or replacement — is rarely trivial.

Why the front right wheel is consistently the most exposed

When parallel parking, the driver positions the vehicle by relying on the left-hand mirror and steering feel. The right-hand side remains in the natural blind spot from the driving position. As a result, the front right wheel strikes the kerb before the driver has a chance to correct the steering.

Two factors make the situation worse:

  • Full lock turns the wheel outward, which mechanically brings the rim's sidewall closer to the kerb edge.
  • The front overhang of saloons and SUVs often extends 80 to 110 cm beyond the axle: the wheel rim edge makes contact first, even before the bodywork is at risk.

On wider wheels (18, 19 or 20 inches), the exposed sidewall is proportionally larger, increasing the contact surface with the granite or concrete of the kerb. A superficial scratch can quickly become a 2 to 4 mm deep gouge, right where the material is at its thinnest.

What it actually costs

Repair or replacement costs vary depending on wheel size and type, but the typical ranges observed are as follows:

Situation Estimated cost (one wheel)
Cosmetic repair (light scratches) 80 – 150 EUR
Repair with straightening (impact and deformation) 150 – 300 EUR
18-inch alloy wheel replacement (fitting included) 300 – 700 EUR
20-inch alloy wheel replacement (fitting included) 500 – 1,200 EUR

These costs apply to a single wheel. For an insurance claim, the standard excess typically falls between 150 and 300 EUR — often more than the repair itself for an isolated scratch.

The urban landscape compounds the problem

French kerbs were not designed with low-profile tyres in mind. In dense urban areas, kerb heights vary from 8 to 18 cm depending on the neighbourhood and the era of construction. Cobbled zones, underground car park exits, and delivery areas with protruding kerbs are recurring risk points, regardless of the driver's level of experience.

Drivers of BMW or Audi vehicles fitted with 19- or 20-inch tyres as standard are particularly at risk: the wheel rim flange protrudes well beyond the tyre due to the low profile rating (35 to 45), leaving the aluminium directly exposed to the kerb.

What a rim protection profile does at the wheel edge

The AlloyGator profile is inserted between the tyre bead and the rim flange. It forms a continuous physical barrier around the entire circumference, absorbing kerb contact in place of the aluminium. Fitting takes approximately one hour at an approved fitter in our network, at a cost of around EUR 99 for a full four-wheel set.

The value proposition is straightforward: a single fitting protects all four wheels against damage that almost always costs more than this amount to repair on the front right alloy wheel alone. For owners of Citroën vehicles or other cars with alloy wheels larger than 17 inches, the calculation is exactly the same.

FAQ

Can the protector be fitted on the front right wheel only?

Technically yes, but this is not the recommended approach. The AlloyGator set is designed for four wheels. In urban driving, kerb impacts also affect the rear right wheel when pulling out of a parallel parking space, and the front left wheel on tight roundabouts.

Will the profile fit on an already-scratched alloy wheel?

A superficial scratch does not prevent fitting. However, if the wheel rim edge is deformed or has material torn away, a prior inspection by an approved fitter is required to verify that the tyre bead seats correctly.

Does the protector withstand a severe impact against a 15 cm kerb?

The profile absorbs glancing contacts and moderate impacts — the kind that account for 90% of parallel parking scrapes. A direct impact at significant speed may damage the profile itself, but it can be replaced individually, unlike an aluminium wheel.
