- Profile thickness: between 5 and 8 mm of dense material (high-density nylon or polyurethane), compared with 1 to 3 mm for a cosmetic rim strip.
- Lateral projection: the profile extends slightly beyond the edge of the wheel to physically interpose itself between the aluminium and any obstacle. A rim strip sits flush with or set back from the edge.
- Fixing method: an effective profile is clamped between the tyre bead and the wheel during fitting, with no adhesive. Unlike an adhesive strip, it cannot come loose on first contact with a kerb.

Both products are often sold under the same generic term of "wheel rim protector". A driver who buys a cheap trim strip thinking it will protect their alloy wheels is taking a real risk: a deep scratch on an alloy wheel costs between £80 and £200 per wheel to repair at a specialist, and a heavily damaged wheel can cost over £300 to replace. Can a structural profile be fitted over an existing trim strip?
No. The structural profile is fitted between the tyre bead and the wheel rim during mounting. Any pre-existing adhesive material must be cleanly removed before fitting, as it may compromise the seal or the correct positioning of the profile.
Does changing tyres affect the protective profile?
