Angle parking and parallel parking: the manoeuvres that cost you dearly

Protecting your alloy wheels from kerb damage: bay parking and parallel parking are the two most damaging manoeuvres for your alloy wheels, far more so than open-road driving.

Every week, thousands of drivers return home with a scratched alloy wheel without even realising it. The kerb hasn't moved. The front right wheel, however, has taken the hit. Between the blind spot above the front wing, the misjudged depth of an angled bay, and that last parallel parking correction, alloy wheel edges accumulate contacts. The cost follows.

Why these two manoeuvres cause more damage than anything else

In an angled bay, the entry trajectory requires a significant steering angle. The front right wheel — the one that "cuts" towards the kerb — travels a tight arc, often less than 15 cm from the edge. The driver focuses on the gap between their bodywork and the neighbouring vehicle; the alloy wheel, meanwhile, is outside their direct field of vision.

When parallel parking, the critical phase occurs during the counter-steer: as you reverse and then straighten up, the front right wheel is sent towards the kerb at low speed but at maximum angle. It is precisely this combination — high angle, low speed — that produces the deepest scratches, because the rim scrapes rather than bounces off.

The front right wheel blind spot: what your mirrors don't show you

The right-hand mirror shows the body line and the rear wheels. The front right wheel, however, sits ahead of the steering axis and moves through a dead zone that neither the mirror nor the reversing camera covers in real time when entering an angled bay. The result: contact occurs with no audible or visual warning — especially on low-profile tyres (17 inches and above), where the tyre absorbs nothing.

Two habits can help reduce the risk:

  • Tilt the right-hand mirror downwards during the manoeuvre, to see the kerb line on the passenger side — a technique recommended for parallel parking and equally applicable in angled bays.
  • Anticipate the point of no return: in an angled bay, correction is only possible before the wheel has passed the lateral edge. Beyond that point, steering further only makes things worse.

FAQ

Does the profile withstand multiple kerb contacts, or does it wear out after the first impact?

The high-density nylon used can withstand repeated contacts. The profile gradually erodes on its outer edge, but retains its protective function over time. Most users only replace it after several years of intensive use.

Does the profile affect handling or increase fuel consumption?

The profile is positioned on the static part of the alloy wheel, outside the rolling zone. It has no effect on wheel balance (provided fitting is carried out correctly), rolling resistance, or vehicle handling in corners.
