Every time a wheel grazes a kerb, a car park edge or a poorly designed speed bump, it is the outer rim of the alloy wheel that takes the hit first. As a result, when the wheel makes lateral contact with a kerb, it is the bare aluminium that touches the concrete or stone, not the rubber. The hardness of aluminium (approximately 70 on the Brinell scale for a standard alloy) is considerably lower than that of granite or compacted concrete. Scratching is almost inevitable.

The contact mechanism: what happens in a few tenths of a second

The most common scenario is not a violent head-on impact, but a low-speed lateral scrape: a parking manoeuvre, a tight parallel park, a sharp turn down a cobbled alleyway. The wheel is still turning as the rim edge grazes the kerb — this combined movement (rotation + lateral friction) gouges the alloy over 5 to 15 cm of circumference, sometimes more.

FAQ

Does the profile affect tyre behaviour or wheel balancing?

No. The profile is slotted into the natural channel between the tyre and the rim, with no adhesive or mechanical fixings. Its weight (a few grams per wheel) is negligible compared to the mass of an alloy wheel. Balancing is redone at the time of fitting: no effect on handling or tyre wear has been observed.

Does the profile stay in place at motorway speeds?

Yes. The profile is held in place by the pressure of the tyre against the rim, which increases with speed. It is approved for normal road use, including on motorways. No specific speed limit is imposed by the manufacturer under standard conditions of use.

Can the profile be fitted at home, or does it need to be done by an approved fitter?
