Cleaning your protected alloy wheels: maintenance tips and products

Maintaining your AlloyGator alloy wheel protector takes just five minutes per wash: here are the compatible products and the mistakes to avoid to keep the profile in perfect condition.

Once the profile is fitted between the tyre sidewall and the rim edge, it is exposed to the same debris as the rest of the wheel: cast iron brake dust, tarmac particles, winter road salt. Poor product choices — solvent-based dressings, acid cleaners, high-pressure steam at less than 20 cm — can dull the surface, weaken the fit or create micro-movement between the profile and the alloy wheel. The aim of this guide is to clarify what to use, how often, and when to have the assembly inspected by a professional.

Products compatible with the AlloyGator profile

The profile surface is made from high-resistance nylon. It tolerates the vast majority of pH-neutral cleaners sold for automotive care, but reacts poorly to concentrated solvents and strong acids used to strip heavily soiled alloy wheels.

  • Diluted APC (All Purpose Cleaner, ratio 1:10 to 1:20) — degreases brake dust without attacking the nylon. Typical price: 8 to 15 EUR per litre of concentrate, sufficient for around twenty washes.
  • pH-neutral alloy wheel foam spray — apply directly, rinse off 60 seconds later. Expect to pay 6 to 12 EUR for a 500 ml bottle.
  • Microfibre cloth or soft brush — avoid wire-bristle brushes, which scratch the surface and can create movement between the profile and the rim edge.

To be avoided at all costs: cleaners containing phosphoric or hydrofluoric acid, silicone dressings with a solvent base (these cause the profile to slip on the alloy wheel under lateral pressure), and high-pressure jets aimed directly at the tyre/profile junction.

Maintenance frequency: a practical schedule

Salt accelerates galvanic corrosion between the profile and the aluminium rim edge if salt-laden water pools at the junction. A quick rinse with clean water after each journey in winter conditions is sufficient to limit this risk.

Periodic inspection and reshaping: what should you check?

During the six-monthly inspection, check three specific points:

  • Profile continuity: no segment should show a through-crack or localised separation. Slight surface deformation after contact with a kerb is normal and does not affect the protection of the underlying alloy wheel.
  • Splice positioning: the profile junction must remain oriented towards the inside of the wheel, away from the lateral impact zone.
  • No lateral play: when pressing laterally on the profile by hand, it should not move more than 2 mm. Any greater play indicates that the fitting needs to be checked by an approved fitter in the network.

In the event of significant deformation following a severe impact (high kerb, speed bump taken at excessive speed), hot reshaping of the profile is sometimes possible before it compromises the seal with the rim edge. This operation, carried out by a technician, takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes per affected wheel. If the deformation is a through-crack, the segment is replaced individually — a concrete advantage over an alloy wheel, which requires a full refurbishment or replacement at £150–400 per unit.

FAQ

Can the AlloyGator profile be taken through an automatic car wash?

Yes, provided the car wash brushes are not metallic. Textile roller washes are safe. Avoid direct jet lances aimed at less than 15 cm from the profile/tyre junction, as these can force water under the profile on recent fittings (less than 48 hours old).

Can tyre dressing migrate onto the profile and weaken it?

Water-based tyre dressings have no effect on the profile's nylon. Solvent-based dressings applied generously can, over time, degrade the surface appearance and reduce the profile's grip on the rim edge. Always apply tyre dressing with a precise applicator, avoiding any spillage onto the profile.

Can the profile come off on its own while driving after poor maintenance?

Not under normal conditions: the fixing relies on the mechanical pressure exerted by the sidewall of the inflated tyre, not on an adhesive. However, a chronically under-inflated tyre (below 1.6 bar on a 17-inch wheel) reduces this pressure and may, over time, leave sufficient play for a lateral impact to cause the profile to slip. Maintain the pressures recommended by the manufacturer and have the whole assembly checked by an approved fitter in the network during the six-monthly inspection.
