Your alloy wheels are the first thing that gives away a car's condition. A tight parallel park, a poorly judged kerb, and the scratch or chip is there to stay — often permanently. So how do you protect your alloy wheels effectively and for the long term? Here are the solutions that actually work, and the one we recommend.
Why alloy wheels get damaged so quickly
Aluminium is lightweight and attractive, but it's a soft metal. Even the slightest kerb strike cuts into the rim's edge — the most exposed area, the part that sits proud of the tyre. The result: a scratched or scuffed alloy wheel that reduces your vehicle's value and leads to costly alloy wheel refurbishment. Prevention is always better than repair, especially on 18, 19 or 20-inch wheels where the rim edge is wide and prominent.
Solutions for protecting your alloy wheels
There are three main approaches to alloy wheel protection:
- Lacquer or ceramic coating: protects against dirt and micro-scratches, but offers no real defence against a genuine kerb impact.
- Wheel wrapping: changes the appearance of the wheel, but does nothing to absorb impacts.
- Alloy wheel protectors: a flexible rim guard fitted to the wheel edge that physically absorbs impacts. This is currently the only solution that truly protects against kerb damage.
AlloyGator: the alloy wheel protector that takes the hit
The AlloyGator wheel protector is a high-resistance nylon ring that fits between the tyre and the rim edge. It protects your alloy wheels from kerb strikes, scuffs and debris, while giving the wheel a clean, finished look. Available in a wide range of colours — including the ever-popular AlloyGator black — it fits virtually any vehicle, from city cars to SUVs.
Our best-seller is the AlloyGator Set 4: the complete kit to fit and protect all four alloy wheels in one go. An alloy wheel protector that becomes invisible in everyday use, and can be replaced individually after a heavy impact.

Which protection for which wheel size?
AlloyGator fits wheels from 12 to 24 inches. Whether you're looking for 18-inch wheel protection, 19 or 20 inches, the principle remains the same: the ring hugs the rim edge and acts as a barrier before the aluminium ever touches the kerb. With alloy wheel protectors, it's the rim edge — not the size — that matters.
Fitting and maintenance
Fitting an AlloyGator is carried out with the tyre mounted, using the dedicated tool kit: the ring is inserted into the rim channel and locked into place. Allow approximately twenty minutes per wheel for the initial fitting. For maintenance, a standard alloy wheel cleaner is all you need — the protector stays firmly in place and requires no special upkeep.
Frequently asked questions
Are alloy wheel protectors genuinely effective?
Yes. Unlike a lacquer, an AlloyGator ring physically absorbs the energy of a kerb impact before it reaches the aluminium. It's a mechanical barrier, not simply a surface treatment.
Is a wheel protector worth it?
Alloy wheel refurbishment typically costs far more than a set of protectors. On high-value wheels, the investment pays for itself from the very first kerb avoided.
How do you avoid damaging your alloy wheels day to day?
Keep your distance when parking, check your tyre pressure regularly… and fit a permanent protector for the unexpected. Care alone isn't always enough — protection is.
