Summer: holiday departures, packed boots and kerbed alloy wheels

August 7, 2026 36

Boot packed to the brim, four adults on board, alloy wheel protection at the bottom of the priority list — and yet that's precisely when alloy wheels take the hardest knocks.

Every summer, the same scenario plays out: the car leaves home carrying an extra 80 to 120 kg of luggage, children in the back, the rear seat folded flat. Ride height drops by 15 to 30 mm depending on the model — enough to alter the wheel arch geometry and bring the tyre sidewall, and therefore the rim edge, closer to the ground. The result: obstacles that are normally harmless become genuinely dangerous. Motorway service area kerbs designed for articulated lorries, speed bumps in holiday complex car parks, ferry quayside edges — these are all situations where the risk of rim contact is real and quantifiable.

What a heavy load really does to your running gear

A family saloon loaded to its maximum authorised load (MAL) sees its centre of gravity rise and its ground clearance fall. On a vehicle fitted with 18 or 19-inch wheels — now standard on compact SUVs and family cars — the offset is low and the rim edge quickly comes level with a pavement or kerb. The shock absorbers, already at the bottom of their travel, no longer absorb minor impacts as effectively. At 10 km/h in a seaside supermarket car park, a single contact with a kerb can scratch the rim protector over 5 to 15 cm in one hit.

The highest-risk situations when setting off on holiday:

  • Motorway service areas: raised concrete kerbs 8 to 12 cm high, sharp edges, poorly visible at night
  • Resort and holiday complex car parks: concrete bollard markings, sloped entrances, lane widths under 2.30 m
  • Ferry terminals and ferries: metal guide rails, gangways with raised edges
  • Village streets in Provence or Brittany: flush granite setts, uneven pavements, limited room to manoeuvre when parking

The real cost of a damaged alloy wheel away from home

Having a scratched or buckled alloy wheel repaired far from home can seriously complicate your return journey. Here are the price ranges observed on the French market:

Type of damage Average repair cost Estimated lead time
Surface scratch (rim edge) EUR 80 – 150 per wheel 1 to 2 days
Paint chipping + minor straightening 150 – 250 EUR per wheel 2 to 3 days
Rim edge deformation (slow puncture) EUR 250 – 400 per wheel 3 to 5 days
Replacement of an original 18-inch alloy wheel EUR 350 – 700 per unit Subject to availability

These figures exclude the labour cost of tyre removal and refitting (an additional EUR 30 to 60). During peak season, local workshops are fully booked: the lead times quoted above may well double.

Fitting an alloy wheel protector before you set off: the case for prevention

An AlloyGator set — four technical polymer alloy wheel protectors + fitting kit — takes around one hour to fit at a network approved fitter, for an investment of approximately 99 EUR including fitting. The profile slides between the tyre and the rim edge, absorbing any contact in place of the alloy. It does not affect tyre pressure or balance. In the event of a kerb impact, it is the profile that takes the wear, not the rim.

For families setting off in a loaded SUV or estate car, alloy wheel protection makes perfect sense before a long journey: a fitting carried out one week before departure is all it takes. The colour simulator available on the Dacia page, as on the other brand pages on the site, lets you choose a colour to match your bodywork. Drivers of BMW or for Citroën will also find the references suited to their alloy wheels there.

FAQ

Does a loaded car increase the risk to your alloy wheels?

Yes, directly. A load of 100 kg reduces ground clearance by 15 to 30 mm depending on the vehicle and shock absorber calibration. The rim edge sits closer to the ground and to obstacles, particularly during slow manoeuvres in a car park or at a ferry terminal.

Does the AlloyGator alloy wheel protector stay in place at motorway speeds?

The profile is held in place by tyre pressure between the sidewall and the rim flange. It does not shift at high speed or under heavy braking. No adhesive or screws are required; removal is possible without specialist tools.

Can the protectors be fitted in the week before departure?

Fitting takes one hour at an AlloyGator network approved fitter. It is advisable to book an appointment a few days before departure, especially in July and August when schedules are busy. The network covers the whole country; find the accessories and the approved fitter locator on the site.
