Leasing a used car: the condition of your wheels at the start counts double

August 14, 2026 26

With a used-car lease, the condition of the wheels at the outset directly determines what you will pay at return.

Leasing a used vehicle on a PCP agreement means inheriting a history you didn't write. Alloy wheels have often already encountered a kerb, a pothole, or a tight parking angle. If you don't carefully document their condition at delivery, any new scuff — however minor — can be charged to you on return as though you were solely responsible. The issue isn't cosmetic: it's a matter of evidence and figures.

Used-car leasing: why the initial condition of your alloy wheels is a contractual flashpoint

On a new vehicle on a lease, the reference condition is by definition zero defects. On a used vehicle on a PCP/lease agreement, the starting position is less clear-cut. The contract generally refers to "acceptable fair wear and tear", but this notion remains open to interpretation. Finance companies appoint specialist inspection providers at return who apply standardised assessment grids — and those grids take no account of any damage already present when you took the vehicle on.

The practical result: a scratch on the edge of an 18-inch alloy wheel, already present at delivery but not recorded in the condition report, can generate a charge at return of €80 to €180 per wheel depending on the inspection provider and the diameter in question. On a set of four wheels in poor initial condition, the total exposure can exceed €500.

Documenting wheel condition at delivery: the checklist to follow

The rule is simple: if it isn't written down, it doesn't exist. When taking delivery of the vehicle:

  • Photograph each wheel from three angles (front-on, side, 45° profile), with the timestamp function enabled.
  • Insist that every existing mark is noted on the delivery condition report — even the "minor" scuffs.
  • If the lessor refuses to record a visible defect, send a summary email within 48 hours of delivery: this constitutes evidence of good faith.
  • Keep these documents until the contract is fully closed, including after the physical return of the vehicle.

This documentation does not remove the need to protect the wheels for the duration of the contract — it simply establishes the baseline.

Alloy wheel protection on a used-car lease: what it changes over the life of the contract

A used PCP contract typically runs for 24 to 48 months. Over that period, every car park exit, every damaged road surface, every tight manoeuvre is an opportunity to add another mark. Large-diameter alloy wheels — 17, 18, 19 inches — are particularly vulnerable because their tyre sidewall is shorter, offering less cushioning between the wheel and any obstacle.

A protective profile fitted between the tyre and the rim absorbs low-to-moderate lateral impacts — kerbs, edging stones, parking rails. Fitted from the moment you take charge of the vehicle, it ensures that the condition documented at delivery matches the actual condition at return, with no new damage to the rim edge.

The set of 4 AlloyGator alloy wheel protectors is compatible with the vast majority of aftermarket alloy wheel fitments. Fitting takes approximately one hour at an approved fitter in our network, at an all-in cost of around €99. Spread over a 36-month contract, that's less than €3 per month to eliminate a billing risk that can exceed €500.

If you are leasing a model such as an Audi or a BMW as a used vehicle — cars that are often fitted with 18- to 20-inch alloy wheels where repair costs are high — the calculation is even more favourable.

FAQ

Can a lessor refuse to allow a wheel protector to be fitted on a leased vehicle?

From a contractual standpoint, a protective profile fitted between the tyre and the rim does not constitute an irreversible modification to the vehicle. It can be removed without trace. The majority of lease agreements do not prohibit it, but check the clause relating to accessories or modifications before fitting, and retain the option to remove it before return if your contract requires this.

What happens if existing damage was not recorded at delivery?

Without any mention in the initial condition report, this damage will be presumed to have occurred during your period of possession. The inspection provider appointed at return will apply their pricing grid without taking prior condition into account. Your only recourse is external evidence (a timestamped photograph, or an email sent within 48 hours of delivery).

Can the alloy wheel protectors be removed before returning a leased vehicle?

Yes. The AlloyGator profile can be removed by hand, without any specialist tools and without leaving any mark on the wheel or the tyre. If your contract requires the vehicle to be returned in its original condition, simply remove it before the return inspection. The condition of the wheels underneath remains exactly as documented at the time of fitting.
