Alloy wheels: why they get damaged so quickly (and how to prevent it)

Your car leaves the garage with immaculate alloy wheels. Six months later, the edges are scratched, the lacquer is blistering in places, and the repair quote is higher than you ever anticipated. Alloy wheels designed for looks, not durability

Over the past decade or so, manufacturers have made large-diameter alloy wheels standard across their ranges — 18, 19, or even 21 inches on SUVs and premium saloons — paired with low-profile tyres (40 to 45 series). This choice improves handling and aesthetics, but drastically reduces the buffer zone between the road surface and the rim. In urban environments, even the slightest contact with a kerb, gutter or poorly marked speed bump is transmitted directly to the aluminium rim edge.

Added to this is the surface treatment: the majority of modern alloy wheels receive a clear lacquer coat, sometimes a diamond-cut finish (CNC machining + lacquer), with a layer measuring barely 60 to 120 microns. This thinness delivers the visual effect in the showroom; however, it offers limited mechanical resistance against concrete abrasion.

The true cost of a damaged alloy wheel

The cost of a repair varies depending on the depth of the damage and the complexity of the wheel finish. As a guide, typical prices observed in France:

  • Superficial lacquer scratch: £60 to £120 per wheel (sanding, lacquer, curing)
  • Chip or minor rim edge deformation: £120 to £220 per wheel
  • Diamond-cut wheel (CNC finish): £180 to £320 per wheel — some workshops refuse the repair
  • Brand-new OEM wheel replacement: £300 to £800 per wheel depending on the model

For a driver who commutes through the city on a daily basis, two to three incidents per year on one or two sides can easily amount to £400 to £600 in restoration costs — not counting any asymmetric tyres that may need replacing at the same time if the sidewall has been crushed.

Drivers with vehicles on a PCP or leasing agreement are particularly exposed: return conditions require the wheels to meet the lessor's condition standards, and damage penalties range from £80 to £250 per wheel depending on the applicable pricing schedules.

Preventive measures: what helps (and what isn't enough)

A few habits can reduce the risk without eliminating it entirely: parking away from kerbs, choosing wider car parks, checking tyre pressure (an under-inflated tyre increases the risk of rim-to-ground contact). Yes. The profile is positioned on the outer face of the rim, with no contact with the machined surface. The CNC finish is indirectly protected through the absorption of lateral impacts before they reach the polished surface.

Does the protection withstand impacts at normal urban driving speeds?

The profile is designed for the low-speed impacts typical of urban manoeuvres: parking, crossing kerbs, resting against a border. It is not designed for high-speed impacts or for rim deformation caused by severe shocks (deep pothole at 70 km/h).

Self-fitting is technically possible, but it requires the tyre to be dismounted from the rim.
