Can a low-speed kerb strike really damage an alloy wheel?

Yes. Aluminium is a relatively soft material when faced with a concrete edge. A contact at 3 or 4 km/h — a typical parallel parking speed — is enough to create a gouge 1 to 2 mm deep. The protective paint gives way first, then the metal is scored. The damage is irreversible without intervention.
